Chapter 20

Diego wasn’t going to be late. As a matter of fact, he wasn’t even going to pick her up. Indigo was busy helping out with the noon-day rush when she received a text from him letting her know that a problem with a client had come up and he had to stay at the office.

At first, she was upset. She had been looking forward to spending time with him, which surprised her, but they had had a good conversation when he’d driven her home from the hospital, and she wanted to continue it. Then she got an idea. Granted, it was bold.

The afternoon sun quickly faded as she finished tending to her last customer of the day. She took Gambit home and read Diego’s text one last time before hopping into the warm shower. She slipped on a racerback blouse, jeans that hugged her curvaceous figure, and a pair of Ralph & Russo pumps, spritzed two sprays of Versace Bright Crystal Absolu on her neck, and kissed Gambit on the head before heading out the door. The last thing her brain wanted her to do was think about what she was about to do. She just acted.

The hallways of Stewart & Snyder were as quiet as a cemetery. After going to Diego’s office and finding no one, she was about to head to the elevator until she bumped into his secretary, Vanessa, who informed her that he was in the place most junior partners sent their paralegals—the Law Library.

A couple of baby-faced interns were whispering about torts when she spotted Diego in the corner conference room. Indigo stopped in the doorway, taking in the sight of him huddled over a stack of books. There was something about a man reading that made her heart do cartwheels.

He had had a long day, she could tell from the absence of a tie that had no doubt matched the gray suit he had on. The top two buttons of his white dress shirt were undone, giving her a full view of his Adam’s apple. His full lips moved gingerly as he ran his eyes, covered with black-rimmed glasses, over the text.

“So, you begged me for a chance and then stood me up.” Indigo broke the silence, and Diego’s head popped up.

“What are you doing here?” He tried to hide the smile that had started to form on his face by pulling off his glasses. “I thought you were ghosting me when you didn’t text back.”

“I’m a grown woman. I don’t ghost.” Indigo pushed herself off the doorframe. “I’ll just tell you to go to hell and not come back.”

She set a box of burgers and fries on the long table.

Diego unknowingly licked his lips as he took in the spread, prompting Indigo to bite her lip. “So, you brought me food for my trip to hell.” He looked back at her.

“Um . . .” Indigo blinked away her carnal thoughts. “No.” She cleared her throat, pulling out one of the chairs. “It’s your lucky day, Mr.
